Despite the ceasefire agreement in Gaza that came into effect on January 19, Israeli forces have continued their attacks, resulting in over 150 Palestinian martyrs, according to Ismail al-Thawabta, Director General of the Government Media Office in the enclave. In the past two weeks alone, at least 40 people have lost their lives, highlighting a blatant violation of the ceasefire and international law.
The most recent episode of violence occurred this Monday when Israeli soldiers killed three unarmed civilians gathering firewood east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. Al-Thawabta condemned these actions, stating that they not only violate the ceasefire agreement but also reflect a systematic policy of deliberate killings and genocide against the Palestinian people.
“The Israeli occupation is not content with committing crimes; it also attempts to deceive the world with false narratives to cover up its atrocities. However, the overwhelming evidence on the ground exposes its criminal intentions,” the official stated. He emphasized that many of the victims were executed in areas declared as “safe zones” and posed no threat to Israeli forces.
Additionally, warnings have been issued about the potential collapse of hundreds of buildings in Gaza due to intense bombings and fires caused by Israeli attacks. This situation further exacerbates the already critical humanitarian crisis faced by Gazans, who have been living under an Israeli-imposed blockade for over 15 years.
Gaza authorities have urgently called on the international community to take decisive action and demand compliance with the ceasefire. “Israel’s impunity cannot continue. It is the responsibility of the global community to stop these violations and protect civilians,” said Salama Maarouf, Head of the Government Media Office.
The escalation of violence in Gaza has not only resulted in a high number of casualties but has also deepened the destruction of vital infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and homes. Human rights organizations have warned about the devastating impact of these attacks on the population, particularly on children and women, who make up a significant percentage of the victims.
The continuation of Israeli attacks in Gaza underscores the fragility of the ceasefire agreement and the need for a lasting political solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict. Meanwhile, Gazans continue to face extremely difficult living conditions, with limited access to food, clean water, and medical services.
The international community faces an urgent challenge: ensuring respect for international law and protecting civilians in Gaza. Peace in the region will only be possible when the occupation ends and the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination, are respected.
